FRED M2SL explained for retail traders
FRED M2 liquidity and policy transmission. Units: USD Billions. For macro, the value is the change and the context, not the level. Compare to last print, vs 3- and 12-month trend, and vs the market’s expectation into the release. A “hot” M2 Money Supply (YoY) that was already priced moves less than a “soft” print that breaks a 3-month trend. Always read the footnote for seasonal adjustment and revision policy on FRED revisions routinely move YoY by 10–20 bps.
How to read M2 Money Supply (YoY) (unique to M2SL)
- Units and transform: USD Billions. For YoY, prefer YoY % and 3m annualized; for yields, track level and 2s10s spread (see /markets/macro/yield-curve-10y2y).
- Release and revision: check FRED notes for vintage and ALFRED if you need point-in-time (avoid look-ahead).
- Regime use: M2 Money Supply (YoY) maps to growth vs slack vs policy pair with CPI, payrolls and Fed funds before drawing a trading conclusion.
- Chart note: when FRED API is configured, this page charts the series. Today it renders the explainer so crawlers still have a unique, non-thin page.

Common mistakes
Annualizing without seasonal attention, mixing nominal and real, and using non-point-in-time vintages in a backtest (look-ahead). For walk-forward discipline see /methodology.
